Anderson, S.C. WYFF News 4 tested NitroStrike™

First responders in Anderson County will soon test a new fire fighting tool that may help save lives.

POSTED: 4:42 pm EST December 30, 2009

NitroStrike, a nitrogen-based compressed air foam fire extinguishing system, will be used as part of a pilot program for the Anderson County sheriff's and police departments starting next week.
Creator Sean Henry says his product is so efficient, it will not only save lives, but money and the environment.

Fifteen years ago, Henry witnessed every family's worst nightmare.
"Myself and a highway patrolman watched a family burn to death, because all the highway patrolman had was a fire extinguisher," said Henry.
The horrific experience ignited an idea: a nitrogen-based compressed air foam system. Henry says the substance expands water up to 40 times its original size and is more effective than a conventional fire extinguisher.
Anderson Police Capt. Jim Stewart has had problems with the typical dry-chemical extinguisher used by his patrol officers.

"I actually rolled up on a car fire, and the lady, not thinking, pulled her car to the side of the road to get it out of the road, but she pulled it into a gas station. The car was still on fire," said Stewart. "I emptied an entire canister. And the second officer arrived, and we emptied that canister."
"If you don't remove the oxygen -- if you don't remove the heat source and the fuel source -- that fire is going to continue to come back," said Henry.
WYFF News 4 tested NitroStrike with a 1200 degree torch. The product was so strong that any surface it came in contact with would not ignite.
Henry says the foam is 100 percent biodegradable and does not have a shelf life.
"It would be a great benefit to us, and at this time, cost saving," said Stewart.
